Dear Reader,

So you are interested in what God might think about abortion. Actually, you are not alone in asking that question, and you will find voices raised for and against the practice of destroying unwanted fetuses for whatever reason. Please take the time to read the paragraphs below, and then click “more” for more information.

It is my firm belief that every individual is known by God, and that knowledge is supernatural (see Psalm 139). Not only does God know every person, but He also has a unique plan for every person’s life. The Bible indicates to us that God even reveals His plan to some parents before the child is even born, (Rebekah and her twins, Genesis 25:22-23), and in a few cases even before the baby was conceived (Abraham and Isaac, Genesis 15:4; John the Baptist, Luke 1:5-16). If we accept the Bible as accurate and authoritative, we then recognize that each fetus is a real person with real purpose in this life. Therefore, to destroy a fetus is to destroy a person and a life that God initially had plans for. Who knows: we may have already destroyed through abortion the person who would have found the cure for cancer, or who would have made a major breakthrough in the area of service, industry, the arts, or other noble causes. Even if the person so destroyed would never have achieved national or global acclaim, every person is valued and worthwhile in the eyes of God, for He tells us that He loved the (whole) world and gave His Only Begotten Son as the sacrifice for our sin ( John 3:16). So whether for moral, social, economic, mental, or other reasons, abortion is not an option for the person who wants to please God.

Perhaps you are wondering, “What will happen to me if I’ve already had an abortion, or have encouraged my partner to have an abortion?” I’m glad that I can tell you that God can and does forgive us when we come to Him in prayer, repent of our wrongdoing, ask for His forgiveness, and permit Him to direct our lives (I John 1:9). I am also glad that God does give aid, strength, and encouragement to those who choose to carry their baby full term, and give life to another human being. Who but God alone knows, but that mother contemplating an abortion may well be taking the life of one who just might be our President some day!
